Jermaine’s knee is feeling good, and he’s starting to get back into a rhythm on the court. Despite Jermaine’s protests and assurances that he isn’t feeling pain, the Pacers medical staff has him on a strict 20 minutes per game limit.
“It’s tough,” Jermaine said. “Coach wants me to play as much as I want to play, but the bigger picture is about longevity and next year, and being able to finish this year strong. It was tough coming out in the fourth quarter, but that’s part of the plan. That 20 minutes creeps up on you real quick, and sometimes it creeps up on you in tough situations in the fourth quarter when another team is making its run and you have a rhythm.”
Despite wanting to play more Jermaine has succumbed to the fact that it is in his best interests and the best interests of the club to limit his minutes while he is coming back from the injury. Pacer’s head coach Jim O’Brien has been pleased with Jermaine’s progress, but isn’t going to play Jermaine for more than 20 minutes no matter how good Jermaine feels.
“No thought at all — zero,” O’Brien told IndyStar when asked if he thought about keeping O’Neal in the game. “I’ve been told by our medical people that’s his limit. He said he felt great. I’m glad he felt great. Maybe we can increase his minutes. When I’m told by our medical people he has 20 minutes, that’s what we’re going with.”
