Jermaine O'Neal sits again, plans to return in knee brace

Miami Heat center Jermaine O’Neal has agreed to play in a brace when he returns from the hyperextended right knee that has kept him out of the past two games, including Wednesday night’s game against the Detroit Pistons at the Palace of Auburn Hills.

O’Neal, who has had minimal knee trouble this season after playing in a knee brace last season, said he could return to practice as soon as Thursday, in advance of Friday’s game against the Indiana Pacers at Conseco Fieldhouse.

“It’s still a little sore,” he said of the injury sustained in the first quarter of last Friday’s road victory against the Milwaukee Bucks. “But I think at this point I’m not looking for complete health. You’re not really going to be pain free. You want to be smart with it.”

Such prudence has convinced the 14th-year veteran to return in the brace.

“I will wear a brace,” he said. “I’ve got to be smart about it. I don’t like the feel of the braces and the look of the braces. It makes you look hurt.

“But at this point, it’s about me staying as safe and as healthy as possible. And if I’ve got to wear it until the end of the year, I will.”
